It’s not uncommon to hear people talk about being “blessed” when they feel like something is going their way. Maybe they found a great deal on an expensive item, received a promotion at work, or renewed a relationship. Perhaps there was a situation where someone expected things to go poorly, but with a better outcome they decided it’s a blessing.
While these are positive outcomes and show favor, they don’t identify the root of a true blessing. Let’s take a closer look at what it means to be truly blessed.

Foundational View Behind Blessings
While different situations can be counted as blessings, it might be a point of contention to hinge or wait on these occurrences to judge your status.
A better starting point is to realize that your identity promotes a continuous blessing on its own. It’s the foundation for what we’ll count as blessings moving forward.
Each of the examples stated are favor shown to us, but your identity is one of the largest blessings you have. Comprehending this concept allows peace and joy no matter what your circumstances.
Instead of judging your worth, abilities, or favor based on what you have or are waiting to receive, look within at what you’ve already gained.
A deeper understanding of this creates space for recognition of things you’ve never noticed before. It also births greater ability to grasp why looking outward often makes it harder to see true blessings.
Why Whose We Are Blesses Us
Instead of looking around to identify your blessings, begin to realize the root and where they come from. The view that we are a part of God’s plan and have a home with Him creates unmistakable blessings no matter your current circumstances.
Before we move to specific ways to view your identity, we’ll address part of the movement of God which is to bless us by showing favor and protection. As he draws near to us, it promotes reciprocal movement, if we recognize the source. But this is often short-lived while things are going well.
Mercy
The greatest blessing that should first be mentioned is the cross. It was an act that keeps us from having personal punishment although it’s ours to pay. This forgiveness of our sins allows a life in eternity after death. It is available to everyone.
God chose to show us mercy when we were destined to pay for sins on our own. His choice of blessing created an eternal place for us no matter how bad our sins have been. This is available for everything we’ve done and will do; past, present, and future. It pertains every day.
Grace
Another amazing blessing available to each of us is grace. This involves the things we usually consider as noticeable blessings. They are a reflection of God’s favor. His timing and choices are perfect. These are things given to us although we are undeserving.
Often, we judge our favor in God’s eyes by what He grants us. However, remembering that His love isn’t based on what we tangibly see is important because grace is freely given. Instead, we recall the mercy He’s shown us and reflect on what an amazing blessing we have daily.
Why Who We are is a Blessing
God’ protection and favor are two of our greatest gifts. Let’s continue to look at several ways to view your identity that show God’s grace.
Child of a King
Being the child of a King gives you a chosen identity. No matter where you stand, there are no orphans with this mentality. You won’t be left behind, shunned, or judged as unworthy.
Your blessings aren’t earned. They are granted because we are children of a King.
Even if your circumstances may not always feel that they relate to this concept, believing it creates great hope. It’s important to understand that God doesn’t love you based on what you do or how good you are. Your favor from God is not based on reward from behavior. It’s yours because He grants it, and we may not always understand the timing or reasons why.
Having a faithful Father means you are never alone, and you’ve already been recognized. Chosen.
“’I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.’” (2 Corinthians 6:18).
Confident and Victorious
This comes from the truth of Scripture, our instruction manual.
We are covered by the blood of Christ which grants healing, forgiveness, and blessing. This belief allows us to approach God’s throne boldly. That means there’s no need for wheeling and dealing. No need for promising God things and asking for favor in return. We can approach Him no matter to build a relationship.
This is a start when we are learning how to believe that we are children of a King. God’s instruction, His Word, teaches us that we can stand with Him for confidence and are victorious no matter what we walk through because our result is eternal life.
Our circumstances have already been chosen in victory; we just have to believe it. This creates a great confidence and optimism that we might otherwise miss.
Think about it. Would you jump out of an airplane alone without understanding anything about a parachute? Or jump with an instructor and listen to nothing that he taught you? You would be afraid, have anxiety, grief, and possibly an unnecessary brutal outcome.
This example can be applied to everyday life. We are given the Bible for guidance and wisdom. There is Scripture for action steps. When we choose to learn the truths in it, we see promises for our circumstances. Without it, we may float along aimlessly, fearful, and hoping for a good outcome.
“So we say with confidence, ’The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?’” (Hebrews 13:6).
Strong
You may have heard it said that God is my strength. This idea comes from first understanding the power that He possesses. While this may seem like an easy concept, it’s often overlooked instead of applied to our circumstances.
Part of the favor we’re granted is counting on His strength each day. When we feel like we can accomplish things independently, we forget our source. But when we recall that our strength is from God, it’s understood that we can’t do things alone. And we don’t have to.
Insults or demeaning thoughts can create difficulty. Instead of walking in self-doubt and fear because we believe lies that we’re told, there’s another choice. We remember that Jesus rose from the dead. His Word tells us that the same power that rose Him from the dead is alive in us. This grants unmistakable strength. It gives us authority, confidence, hope, and faith.
“In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37).
Complete
Another part of our identity that creates blessing is remembering that we are complete and made in God’s image.
Although we are partially finished works on Earth, God already knows our entire story. He is the author of the beginning and the end of our encounters. While we’re partial works here, we are complete by being children of God and choosing to accept our identity; an eternal home with Him.
This doesn’t mean that things will work perfectly, but it means we can rest in realizing that we don’t have to know all the answers or understand everything we face. So, give yourself, and others, a break. View this article on spiritual healing for more explanation.
Try addressing your decisions and situations as though you’re not alone. There’s reassurance and peace to be found in knowing that if you trust God to show up, He will. It may not always look like we expect it to, but His continuous presence is promised.
The things that you walk through on this Earth are great lessons. Seeing them as such allows you to build character and gain wisdom.
“. . .and in Christ you have been brought to fullness.” (Colossians 2:10).
Timeless
When looking at this concept based on our everyday choices, we realize that it often feels like we’re out of time. There aren’t enough hours in the day to accomplish everything we insist on getting done.
Time is one thing you can’t get back but can create more of in particular ways moving forward. How we spend it is important. Sometimes we make decisions that we feel are poor choices. This can create guilt, negative emotions, and make us wish we had some time back.
God’s timing is different than ours. He is faithful to grant more time in the day if we ask. When we rely on Him, and entrust our day to Him, the Creator of the world can orchestrate your day according to His plan instead of your own. This creates less chaos and more peace during your steps.
Each day is a gift because we don’t know how long we have, but we can choose to live well.
The concept of a timeless existence also pertains when realizing that we live in eternal life if we choose Jesus. God has promised us a place at His table, as His heirs, when we join with Him. This allows greater confidence and less regret when we trust that we have eternity with Him.
“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (Psalm 73:26).
Authentic
This is an important part of our identity. Authenticity provides the concept that God isn’t looking for perfection. He only wants us to be real.
Often, we try to appear that we have it altogether, but we know the truth isn’t what we present. Sometimes we think the truth is harder, but in reality, being someone you’re not is more exhausting and difficult than being real.
Hiding behind who you think you should be—or being someone that people want you to be—might make you happy in the moment. But it will never bring you true joy. Joy keeps you steady even in the rockiest of times.
A key ingredient for authenticity is willingness. If we’re forced to move, believe, or choose, it’s never authentic. A real relationship with God comes from within and must be your choice.
It begins with willingness to choose Him, but after this step, it continues with the desire to teach it to others. Willingness spreads the truth about God and can change the world. Showing others you believe by treating them accordingly creates an important ripple effect. It spreads the Gospel.
Being willing is what God asks for. He doesn’t tell us to have complete understanding before reaching out. If this were the case, none of us would be able to speak of His goodness.
We often assume the posture of being qualified first, then are willing to move. His Word tells us that He goes with us and that He seeks those that are willing. This blesses God but is ultimately a true blessing to us.
“’Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’” (John 8:32).
The Choices We Make Bless Us
We recall that we often judge our level of blessing by the good things that are given to us. Altering this idea by realizing what we have already gained helps build character. Making changes from the inside out by increasing your understanding of identity allows great wisdom.
Not only does it change the way you see blessings, but it also creates depth in your spirit. The more like Christ we become, the more of His character we reflect. True character does not disappear when things get shaky. It lasts the duration because it’s backed by truths about our identity.
Revelation of this concept helps create balance and wellness. It builds spirituality and relationship.
There are two kinds of revelation. One is of something brand new that we didn’t previously know about but begin to lean into. The other is about a truth that exists, but we haven’t yet chosen. We haven’t submitted to the concept.
The second type of revelation involves staying bound by life lessons and situations because you haven’t chosen a different way by accepting your identity. God planted in us a spirit of curiosity and willingness. It’s up to us to choose. We don’t have to be perfect, and it’s alright to have doubts about the idea.
Based on His promises, we’re chosen for blessings because of who we are, not by our actions. Willingness to learn more about this builds character in our choices. Using daily intentions for this growth is a great way to promote optimistic steps and gain wisdom.
Final Thoughts About Daily Blessings
By leaning in, we can receive rich blessings simply by whose we are. Being children of a King, and heirs to His throne, creates situations that bless us daily.
Even if circumstances aren’t perfect by our standard, they can be a blessing. By trusting the Author, and the outcome, we gain peace in the process. Our gaps close and balance can be ushered in where there was once chaos.
